Frustrations with Money Mart Titanium Plus Prepaid Visa

The Titanium Plus Prepaid Visa from Money Mart was recently recommended to me.  This post is about my experiences with Money Mart and the Titanium Plus Visa card and the frustrations I faced dealing with Money Mart and their Customer Service department.

The card was easy to get and is easy to load.  A trip to my local Money Mart, answer a few security questions, give them some cash, and viola!  A card is issued.

Several purchases were made with the card.  Then I tried to make a purchase and received a notification that there were insufficient funds.  One would think that the remedy for this would be to go back to the local Money Mart store and top up the card.  I was wrong.

I did make a trip back to Money Mart where I gave them $75.00 to cover a purchase of $53.00.  Back at the computer I was again told there were insufficient funds.  I log into my Titanium Plus account and find there are two pending authorizations or holds on the card for the amount I wanted to charge and still not enough money to complete the transaction.  This is where the nightmare begins.

The image below is a screen shot of Money Mart Policy as taken directly from the Titanium Plus web site.  It clearly states that authorization removals under $100 can be removed over the phone.

Money Mart: Authorization removals under $100 can be done over the phone

I call the toll-free number on the back of my Titanium Plus card and spend over 30 minutes on hold.  Finally I get to speak with a woman I will call Laura.  Laura tells me that she is not able to remove authorizations over the phone and that I must have the merchant fax Money Mart a release form.  She offers to e-mail me a release form to forward to the merchant.  I accept.  Laura is the type of person who is all yap and no listen.  It took me nearly ten minutes to sort out with her what exactly my concern was.

In frustration, I ask to speak with a supervisor.  After more time on hold, I am put in contact with Jennie.  Jennie tells me that she is unable to help me beyond the little that Laura has already done.  She does provide me a tip in that one of my options is to contact the Better Business Bureau and confirms that Policy as outlined on the web is different than what Customer Service can really do for me.

Thanks to spending over 30 frustrating minutes on hold and another twenty minutes with two people who are unable to to resolve my problem quickly, I have to wait another day.  The merchant is now closed.

The next day I talk with the merchant who is very helpful.  The fellow I spoke with is fine with me sending him the release form, filling it out, and faxing it to Money Mart.  He does this and I wait, checking my Titanium Plus account online every half hour or so for funds to be released.

I receive a telephone call from a client and am out for a few hours.  When I get back, I check my Titanium Plus account and funds still have not been released.  I call Customer Service and spend another 40 minutes on hold.  Finally I am able to speak with Matt.  He tells me that the fax was received but is missing the Merchant ID number.  The merchant is now closed so this again will have to wait one more day.

[This section will be updated as events unfold.]

Money Mart consistently over promises and under delivers.  Customer Service does not understand the urgency of helping clients and/or is understaffed.  Later I discover that I am being billed $1.50 for each call I make to Customer Service.  This only adds to my frustration.

Over all, Customer Service have been extremely frustrating to deal with and I do not recommend doing business with Money Mart or using their Titanium Plus Visa.  I have applied for a BMO Prepaid Travel Mastercard.  Once I have had the BMO card for a while and am satisfied, I will be canceling the Money Mart card.

I welcome comments, especially if you have experience with Money Mart and their Titanium Plus Visa.

  1. My card had 44 someone tried to take 75 twice cant get anone to help with this card i think its ripoff

  2. Just letting you all know if you have a login account it doesn’t cost anything to check it. Yes when you call in its 25 cents or something in Canada to check it on phone, but what you expect for getting it so easily. If you need something quick it works. If you want or have money or I’d to ge5 real bank account do it absolutely. But if you want something Fast This is the way to go. And I deal with great people at money Mart, maybey you should go in and talk to an employee I have had mine for 3 years never a problem, but once again why complain about something you get quick and easy, if you want a bank card go get one no one is holdinG you back obviously To have a bank card is better.

  3. Good fro you for posting this, i think you are helping expose some underhanded policy’s and hopfully preventing people allot of grief.

  4. This is the worst reloadable card to use. they have a bunch of hidden fees that they don’t tell you about. They add all monthly fees together and the minute u upload money they take it all and say its outdated fees when i wasn’t even using the card… very unsatisfied. People at money mart know nothing about the card either very unhelpful.

  6. Hello. I seem to be having a similar problem now with a Mytitanium prepaid Master Card from Moneymart. I made a purchase online for $70.64 with Walmet; the funds disappeared from my balance without any debit shown to account for the disappearance; the funds were taken “on hold” pending completion of the sale. My balance available on the card excluding the amount on hold was 173.42
In the meantime, I cancelled the purchase. Walmart refunded the 70.64, it showed up as a credit on my card. However, the BALANCE on my card shrank to 164.57, but there was still no debit to explain it, and I had not shopped and there was nothing else pending. I should have had a balance of 244.06 after the Walmart refund!

It has been DAYS since I began to call the MyTitanium toll-free line trying to get an explanation. I can’t get through the lines. There’s an “unusually long wait” because of Covid. I’ve hung online three times now, for an hour at a stretch to no avail. And here’s the next clinker. For every time I merely DIAL their toll-free and wait online and never get answered, MyTitanium is automatically BILLING me 25c, as though I had spoken to someone when I haven’t at all. I’ve racked up 4 charges of 25c in the past week, still can’t get through to find out WHY my account has been ROBBED of so much money without any debit(s) to show for it. Frankly, fed up. I subscribed to this card because Bank of Montreal’s Mosaic card was a major aggravation, always withholding double the funds required for any purchase, however small, to the point of embarrassment. And now, I see Mytitanium cards are no improvement.

I have also had one horror story after another with Mytitanium cards being rejected for no apparent reason, even AFTER the funds had been taken off. Initially, years ago, I had the MyTitanium VISA card. I purchased one year’s web hosting for $180.00 USD. The web host got the money, while online in a chat with me; and seconds later cancelled the sale without explanation and hung up on me. I had to wait a week for my funds to reappear on my card.

This year, I shopped for two laptops at Amazon. The machines had been promoted to me in my email account. I had more than enough funds to pay for the two machines. Amazon took the money; then without any explanation REVERSED the sale, pretending they had NOT been paid; and began to obstinately accuse me (by implication) of using a card that was not MINE, i.e., a stolen card; but not any ORDINARY stolen card. Amazon accused me of using a bank-issued real credit card that did not belong to me, and obstinately demanded that I produce a “recent bank statement” with my card number, address and phone number on it. Of course, we don’t get those with Titanium cards. Not only does the Amazon system instantly detect the kind of card used to pay, i.e., it can even distinguish a “gift card” — (I was on hold with Titanium while writing this: after an HOUR of waiting again, for which I’ve been billed another 25c the minute I dialed, a pre-recorded male voice announced, “We’re sorry, our system is currently DOWN, please try again later”) — okay, so the Amazon system KNOWS precisely what kind of card is involved, yet the STAFF at Amazon, the invisible staff who reversed my sale and CANCELLED my purchase of two laptops, continued to pretend, for the next two weeks that I was in touch, that this was a STOLEN genuine “credit” card and REFUSED to accept proof from me that (1) I had frequently used the same card to buy books from them, I even photographed a book that arrived in the middle of this accusation and had been paid for on the same good card; (2) scans of the card front & back to prove it’s a Prepaid Titanium with cash on it, and print-screens of the inside of my account online, because there is no statement. In the end, MyTitanium REFUSES to account for this damaging anomaly, refuses to clear my name, and AMAZON has blackballed my name and address, thus banning me from shopping online at Amazon. So, Titanium cards: I don’t recommend them, unless you want to falsely criminalized for using one; and the irony is, Moneymart proomotes these cards as a way to avoid criminality. The titanium-amazon screwup moreover has all the hallmarks of deliberate harassment by Titanium clerks. And I say that because I also had substantial harassment from these people while Titanium was maintaining an online chat service inside each account. I mean real harassment. So, if their hirees take a dislike to you for any reason, you can experience very serious problems with your card that appear to be generated specifically by some of these people interfering to sabotage your purchases for their own amusement.

There must be a better way than Mytitanium. I have even tried Vanilla MasterCards and Visas, but also had screwups, with my $200 paid for a VISA gift card frozen and unuseable despite calls and complaints.

In this day and age, you would think there would be something available that is reliable and tamper-proof against back-end staff members screwing somebody they dislike.

    1. I fully agree I was just on the phone they told me my card was compromised and they had to send me anouther card. Wright when I just added $45 funds to the card. Then told me the card would take 30 days to arrive. So they took 12.99 for fees and there gunna take 12.99 as Iam waiting for my new card. This is fangdangling@its finest I had enough of paying for a card witch I can’t use anf to top it off I call back and tell them I want to cancel my my account and card they tell me there a 9.99 cancellation fees this has me speech-less and I can’t believe they get away with this so I basicly just gave them 45 dollers

  7. Try this one on folks….

I requested a new Titanium card as mine had expired. I was told it would be 3-5 business days until I receive it in mail. I gave it 2 weeks, walked into the store and told them ‘my card is expired and I had requested a new one 2 weeks ago and I still haven’t gotten it in mail”
I explained my tax return is being deposited onto the card, I need to check the balance but card is expired”. He says ” no problem, I can swipe your card and check for you”. He swipes the expired card and says ” sorry, we’ve been having issues with these Titanium cards and I can’t get your balance or even pull up your client profile”.

So I said, “well can I get a new card now instead of continuing to wait for the mail as its already been 2 weeks?’. He tells me no there’s no point to that because one is already on the way”
2 more weeks have gone by now so its been a full month since requesting a new card and waiting to see a balance as I’m still waiting on a tax return. I call the store and was told I haven’t received a new card because I” HAVE TO call the number on the back of the card to request one, not just ask them over the phone for one like I did 4/weeks prior”
So it’s now been 4 weeks so I walk back into the store where I was 2 weeks prior and told them the number on the back ” does NOT offer an option to request a new card so I’m here now give me a card now please” he says he cannot, and he will call straight through to “headquarters” to ask for a new card himself, and to check balance”.
My tax return DID get deposited onto the card but because the card is expired I have to now wait 10 business days for a new card. I asked if I could plz make a withdrawal as I’m IN STORE with all my ID. He said ” because card is expired and they are having issues with them, he can not pull up my file and allow a withdrawl.”. I have to wait until new card eventually gets mailed to me in order to access my own money!!!
So essentially because their card is giving them issues (expired or not) they haven’t been able to access ppls accounts and cannot do business with me until I get a new card. Keep in mind, my refund was deposited but it had less money than what was deposited because money mart has taken card fee charges out for an expired card that I can’t even use. Would not recommend! As soon as the new card comes, if it ever does, I’m extracting all funds off that card and shutting the card down!!!!!! No longer interested in using their card services!!!!!

Complete garbage, and ridiculous card fees. Being charged money when you use the toll free number on the back is disgusting. They simply find too many sneaky ways to charge you money. The card is not worth it folks!!!!!
